Song Lyric Sunday – Apologize

Since I started following Fandango, I have been very impressed with the prompts offered in his blogs from other blogs. Anyway, the Song Lyric Sunday (Song Lyric Sunday) prompt for this week are songs that start with either M or A. Since it is the new year and I have been working on some self-love, I have chosen Apologize by grandson. (Yes, lower case “g”, grandson.)

Everything is always my fault. I do, as the lyrics indicate, apologize for everything…I’m never good enough. But you know what…I am. I will make mistakes. I am imperfect. And I intend to embrace that imperfection and continue moving forward – focusing on loving myself for who I am. (That’s not to say I have given up improving myself…but doing so with love and acceptance and move away from disdain for my shortcomings.)

As for the song itself and the very talented artist, grandson, well, grandson, who’s real name is Jordan Benjamin, is just a young pup (late 20’s) and, since my girls have always said I am drawn to “teenage boy angst music”, he fits right in that mold. He is an Canadian-American artist being born in the eastern US but growing up in eastern Canada. His music is often politically charged (Thoughts & Prayers being a wake up call).

I do lean toward “angry” and “anthematic” music. The song, Apologize, was released in 2019 and he has quite a bit more music (older and more recent) that rock your soul. His music is often an anthem for the young (grandkids, as they are known) and while often times, as an older adult, I want to reason with the lyrics, grandson’s lyrics do resonate with me even as an older adult.

As for the meaning of the lyrics themselves, I am never a good judge of that as I tend to lean toward songs that means something TO ME. But, I did read that grandson posted on twitter some time ago that the song is written as an anthem (duh) to inspire people to not apologize for who they are and keep moving forward with what they believe.

Here are the lyrics and a link to the song:

I lose a bit of myself with every selfie
Lose sleep over wealth it’s not healthy
Finding a new religion on Yelp to come help me
Praying to the label itself do not shelf me
In the middle with the beggars and rejects
Reading between text with weed, liquor and sex
She say she love me at dusk
But at dawn I pack up my things and I’m gone
; And I don’t know where I’m gonna go
But I don’t care I’m on the road
Never been a perfect soul
But I will not apologize
Been a lot of places in this life
And I did a lot wrong I can’t make right
Never been a perfect soul
But I will not apologize; Imperfect, I’m imperfect
No road map getting lost on purpose
Phone no service but It’s clear out here
I’m living with nothing to fear out here
There’s lessons you learn, bridges you burn
All for the cost of a dollar to earn
And they say they love me at dusk
But at dawn I pack up my things and I’m gone; And I don’t know where I’m gonna go
But I don’t care I’m on the road
Never been a perfect soul
But I will not apologize
Been a lot of places in this life
And I did a lot wrong I can’t make right
Never been a perfect soul
But I will not apologize; I don’t know where I’m gonna go
But I don’t care I’m on the road
Never been a perfect soul
But I will not apologize
Been a lot of places in this life
And I did a lot wrong I can’t make right
Never been a perfect soul
But I will not apologize
Said I will not apologize

(And I will not apologize)

So there you have it…my first Song Lyric Sunday. That was fun and since my current (ever growing) playlist consists of well over 2,000 songs ranging from the late 1960’s to current, show tunes from Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar, Christian rock and Islamic Nasheeds, classic rock to thrash metal, rap to pop, reggaeton to music from Africa, Iceland, Mongolia, Germany, and songs in old Norse, Viking chants, classical symphonies to soothing meditation sounds (wait…there are no lyrics there), I think I will find something for these writing prompts.

    1. Yes, I agree it was disturbing. Her scarf was ripped off and she put it back on. That resonated with me as after 9/11 my daughter was harassed in school about her hijab. She was steadfast. The part in the video that distressed me was the father’s reaction to his son.
