Song Lyric Sunday – 1/24/2021

This week’s Song Lyric Sunday prompt are lyrics that include “chat,” “laugh,” “rant,” “scream,” and “talk” as our theme choices. This one was so very hard for me because I have a very, very large playlist with songs over many different genres.

I decided on Illusion & Dream by Poets of the Fall. For me, lyrics mean what they mean for ME. In light of the state of our society, this particular song came to mind because it talks of the “images they sell are Illusion and Dream, in other words, dishonesty.” I won’t go into how this affects me, but maybe I don’t have to. All you have to do is turn on the television and listen to any station reporting the “news”. No matter if you are right or left, Democrat or Republican, black, white, Hispanic, etc. You can find (so-called) “honest” reporting to incite you or placate you. It can be so overwhelming that you stop caring…what does it matter anyway.

In addition, these lyrics remind me that a lot of the thoughts in my head are my OWN reality and not the reality of the actual situation. That is the “demon” I live with on a daily basis.

But lets get into the purpose of this blog and maybe, yet again, I am introducing a new artist to the followers of Song Lyric Sunday.

Illusion & Dream was released in 2005 and is off Poets of the Fall’s album Signs of Life, which was their debut album.

Poets of the Fall are a rock/indie/alternative band hailing from Helsinki, Finland. It was founded by Marko Saaresto and Olli Tukiainen and quickly joined by Markus Kaarlonen. Poets of the Fall are also credited for music in several video games under the name Gods of Asgard.

I was not able to find Marko’s take on the meaning of his lyrics in Illusion & Dream, however he is reported to have said in an interview that all of his lyrics are “momentary visions, thoughts to emotions, they come and go like clouds. I’m more into the clear blue sky of summer, uncluttered, calm and clear.” (Taken from a 2016 interview with Marko on the release of their album, Clearview.)

There are quite a few takes out there on the meaning behind the lyrics, but as with many songs, what drives me to enjoy it is the ability to imagine the “demons” being MY demons. Many a song was ruined for me when the artist’s meaning was set forth. While it is important to honor the artist for the meaning behind their song, it is also a tribute to a truly incredible artist that can write a song that has meaning to many people. In my opinion, that is.

Look in my eyes I’ll make you see
We’re drifting aimlessly
Blind in a world of make believe

Hear them sing their songs off key n’ nod like they agree
Buying the needs to be discreet

I’ve got no hand in matters worldly
I hardly care at all
What’s going on fails to concern me
‘Cause I’m locked behind my wall
But you know what drives me out
Out of my mind oh

It’s whatever makes you see
Makes you believe
And forget about the premonition you need to conceive
The images they sell are Illusion and Dream
In other words dishonesty

If I speak ill please, humour me
Won’t rant on endlessly
Just thought I’d try to make you see

It doesn’t solve a thing to dress it, in a pretty gown
A stone will not need you to guess if, you’re still going to drown
So you know what drives me out
Out of my mind, oh

It’s whatever makes you see, makes you believe
And forget about the premonition you need to conceive
The images they sell are Illusion & Dream
In other words dishonesty

So can you name your demon?
Understand it’s scheming
I raise my glass and say “Here’s to you”

Can you chase your demon?
Or will it take your freedom?
I raise my glass and say “Here’s to you”

I’ve got no hand in matters worldly
I hardly care at all
What’s going on fails to concern me
‘Cause I’m locked behind my wall
But you know what drives me out
Out of my mind oh

It’s whatever makes you see
Makes you believe
And forget about the premonition you need to conceive
That the images they sell are Illusion and Dream
In other words dishonesty

So whatever makes you see
Makes you believe
And forget about the premonition you need to conceive
The images they sell are Illusion and Dream
In other words dishonesty
With silence comes peace
With peace comes freedom
With freedom comes silence

Blogging gets the noise in my head out...at least for a little while. I use blogging to weed through all that noise and find the humor in each situation, even if it takes some time to find it. I am not selling anything, just sharing experiences as a mother, Amma, wife, paralegal, volunteer, Muslimah, sister, daughter, mother-in-law, woman.

  1. What a great song and it’s applicable to so many fields. News, commercials, social media, at the end they’re only illusions.

    Thanks for sharing 🙂

    1. I am glad to hear that. Although I have many of the classic artists, I like introducing artists that may be unknown. I have focused that with my playlists over the last year or so – trying to find relatively unknown artists. So much talent out there.
