Fandango’s Provocative Question #108

Fandango’s provocative question FPQ deals with Valentine’s Day, which is this Sunday. Other than as an elementary school child and making those shoebox mailboxes and sending out Valentine’s Day cards, and a single red rose from my daddy and brother each year, Valentine’s Day was never a big deal. The cards stopped in middle school and the roses stopped when my sister and I went off to college or moved out. I find it embarrassing to be doted upon so any gifts or such make me uncomfortable – much to the pleasure of those I have been romantically involved with.

How do you feel about Valentine’s Day? I feel that Valentine’s Day is just another day on the calendar.

Do you consider it to be a special day, one where you express your deep love and appreciation for your significant other? Nope. I’d like to think that I always express my deep love and definitely my appreciation for my husband regularly. He is never an “after thought” on one day out of the year.

Or is it just a commercialized “Hallmark Holiday” where you feel pressured to spend money on cards, flowers, candy, jewelry, and/or expensive dinners in order to stay on the good side of the one you love? I think it is most definitely a commercialized “Hallmark Holiday”. I do not feel pressured to do anything on Valentine’s Day and if my husband feels slighted because I didn’t do something on that particular day, I would feel like I have failed as a wife, because doing nice things – even buying a random “thinking of you” card – is not isolated to just one day a year.

Either way, what, if anything, are your plans for Valentine’s Day this year? No plans. I’ll ask my husband what he wants for dinner on Sunday, but I do that every week. My husband, if he remembers the date, may suggest we go out to dinner, but that is not to woo me. It is because he likes to go out to eat and any opportunity for an excuse to do that, he jumps on.

Blogging gets the noise in my head least for a little while. I use blogging to weed through all that noise and find the humor in each situation, even if it takes some time to find it. I am not selling anything, just sharing experiences as a mother, Amma, wife, paralegal, volunteer, Muslimah, sister, daughter, mother-in-law, woman.

  1. WE like to go out and eat too, just because none of us wants to cook, which requires going to the supermarket (and we hate going there!) – but I won’t go out to eat on that day due to increased prices, crowded, squished together tables, and them wanting you to finish quickly so they can get the next reservation in. What’s the point of that? It’s not fun and certainly not romantic.

Here’s my post on the challenge:
