This week’s Provocative Question posed by Fandango deals with views on gender identity.
Do you believe that a person’s gender is inextricably tied to his or her sex at birth, or do you believe that a person can legitimately identify as a gender different from his or her birth gender? Why do you believe what you believe? Yes absolutely. I firmly believe that God created male and female and you are as you are born. I believe that our gender is tied to more than just identification.
However, I do believe that individuals can relate to a gender different from his/her birth gender. I do not believe that it changes the fact that they are male or female from birth. So to answer the question on whether or not I believe that person can “legitimately identify as a gender different from his or her birth gender”, I don’t know. I would like to say that “yes, I do”, but females and males are different biologically. That is a fact. God does not make mistakes. And while I believe wholeheartedly a person can dress, behave and carry him/herself as they choose to, I do not believe that merely identifying as a different gender makes you a different gender.
I hold no animosity for those choosing to identify differently from their born-gender, but I also feel that it is not my responsibility to assume a born-female chooses to identify differently. If you wish to be called something other than a female pronoun, by all means tell me and I will honor that request without judgment.
