Song Lyric Sunday – Heaven/Hell

The prompt for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday is Heaven or Hell. I believe there are quite a few songs in my playlists to choose from so I am going to go with a rather obscure, I believe, song and band again. If ever I say that and I am wrong (as my daughters often like to point out) and the band/song has been around since “OMG Mom, since like 5th grade”, please comment. I always like to know that I am just behind the times.

This week I am choosing “Welcome to Hell” by Mono, Inc.

Mono, Inc. is a German gothic rock band formed in 2000. The frontman, Martin Engler, has quite the flair for the dramatic (what gothic band doesn’t right?). The band’s name, Mono, Inc., was derived from the German word “Monomanie”, which is a term for a form of partial insanity conceived as single pathological preoccupation in an otherwise sound mind. “Monomania Incorporated” means “Company of the partially insane”.

The band currently consists of Martin Engler as lead vocals. His voice, to me, is very unique. Very monotone (pun intended). Maybe that is their style. The remainder of the band consists of Manuel Antoni (bass guitar and backing vocals), Carl Fornia (guitar and backing vocals), and a very impressive (in my opinion) female drummer, Katha Mia, who also sings backing vocals. Martin Engler is not the original frontman for Mono, Inc., having joined in 2007 after replacing Milky Mono, who formed Mono, Inc. in 2000. Milky died from a paragliding accident, but not much is found about him – at least not in English. Originally, now frontman, Martin, was the drummer/backing vocals for Mono, Inc., but rising tensions between Milky and the rest of the band members, especially Martin, led to Milky being fired from the band, Martin taking over lead vocals and Katha joining the band as drummer.

While the “official video” portrays a period in time (the plague and the doctors who wore those beaked masks), in a March, 2020, interview, Martin indicated that while many of the band’s songs address events in the past, such as The Inquisition or the Black Plague, we are all apparently doomed to repeat these mistakes and the songs are almost as relevant now, as they were to that time period. I find that particularly true with this song, Welcome to Hell.

Welcome to Hell is off the July, 2018 album of the same name. There are several tracks from this particular album in my playlist. The lyrics present a complex story that, when listened to without the aid of the “official video” could very well be about our current world. This is how I choose to listen to the song. I completely agree with Martin’s take on the world that we easily forget our past or are being forced to erase our past. Martin believes that we are not only forgetting our past, but we are moving toward the abyss relentlessly and gaining speed in the process. Sadly, I agree.

So, if I may indulge you…here is MY take on the song. While I think this song could be addressing a political body leading us down the path to hell, I put this song into a personal, individual eye-opener. I would like to say I don’t hate, I don’t do evil deeds, but it can be very easy to choose not to see the world around us. It’s “not me” doing these things. But if we all live in our own “not me” bubble, if we don’t take responsibility for our own actions and work to change that within ourselves, always willing to blindly move forward in anger and hatred (believing the roorback**) and ignoring the needs of those around us – stuck in believing we are “immortal” and not going to stand on judgment day to answer for every word, every action that we (I) have done, nothing will ever change. — Ok, carefully descending from the soapbox.

Too much sorrow on the oceans
Too much fighting on the streets
Too much roorback** in the headlines
Too much hate and evil deeds
Did you think you’d get off easy
Did you think we would connive
All those dark manipulations
You accomplished in your life

Time to take responsibility
For the games that you misplay
You belief in immortality
And we believe in judgment day

Welcome to hell this is the end
The flame of relief
Welcome to hell this is the end
Don’t succumb to grief
Go on lie and go on blow your horn
Who sows the wind shall reap the storm

Too much cheating and corruption
Degradation and deceit
Too much guile too many victims
No concerns for those in need
Did you think that you could slip through
Did you think that we would blench
We are weak but we are many and we’re seeking for revenge

Time to take responsibility
For the games that you misplay
You belief in immortality
And we believe in judgment day

Welcome to hell this is the end
The flame of relief
Welcome to hell this is the end
Don’t succumb to grief
Go on lie and go on blow your horn
Who sows the wind shall reap the storm

Welcome to hell this is the end
The flame of relief
Welcome to hell this is the end
Don’t succumb to grief
Go on lie and go on blow your horn
Who sows the wind shall reap the storm

Welcome to hell this is the end
The flame of relief
Welcome to hell this is the end
Don’t succumb to grief
Go on lie and go on blow your horn
Who sows the wind shall reap the storm

**”Roorback” is defined as “a defamatory falsehood published for political effect”.

  1. Thank you for sharing this song. The video too is very cinematic.

The lyrics are so true. I especially love his line: ‘Who sows the wind shall reap the storm’

Mono Inc sometimes pops up in my generated playlists, but I never paid them that much attention. I’ll pay better mind next time 😉
