Song Lyric Sunday – Breakups

Being a lover of lyrics that cry out tragedy and angst, you would think I would have a plethora of songs to choose from. I do not. Surprisingly, or maybe not surprisingly if you know my back story, most of my songs deal with loss after death or suicide. There is something about hearing the pain of others and the inspirational words of artists reminding us that we are not alone in that pain, that draws me to that music.

That is not to say that my playlists, which is extensive and where I like to choose my songs from, isn’t full of sad “can’t go on without you” songs, but I wanted to find one that puts the breakup on the other person. So many times in my life, I beat myself up for what I did wrong (or didn’t do that I should have) that ended a relationship. Years of therapy later…here we are.

For this week’s Song Lyric Sunday I have chosen “Heart of Stone” by Kissin’ Dynamite.

Kissin’ Dynamite is a German heavy metal band hailing from the region of Batten-Wurttemburg. (My husband’s ancestors come from that area.) The band formed in 2008 as a school band and gained popularity by opening for Udo Dirkschneider’s band U.D.O. (“Accept”, the German heavy metal band fronted by Udo way back in the day, was one of my favorite bands as a teenager.)

The current band members of Kissin’ Dynamite are: Frontman/vocals – Johannes (Hannes) Braun; Guitarists, Ande Braun, Jim Muller and Steffen Haile; and Drummer, Andi Schnitzer.

The song, Heart of Stone, is from Kissin’ Dynamite’s 2018 album, Ecstasy. In reading the June 2019 interview with Andi Schnitzer, who spoke about this song, he says “…it’s about people – and i guess everyone knows one of them – who lie to their selves. They pretend to be alright and fine and everything, but the truth is, that they’re only wearing a mask and you cannot feel their soul anymore. That’s why they’ve got a heart of stone and why it’ll remain as only thing after they died.” So as with many of the lyrics to songs I love, I wish I hadn’t read that. To me…this song is the end of a relationship because the other person cannot find it in his/her heart to see beyond their narcissistic ways. (ooh, here come the repressed memories…)

In your permanent smile, there’s a touch of incredible sadness
If you’re doing alright, tell me why you’re trying so hard?
If you stand in the sun, why do your eyes shudder with madness?
They are telling no lies, there’s one thing that’s left in the dark

‘Cause you have a heart, a heart of stone
You’re gonna hide it today, but tomorrow you’ll be alone
And from the day that you die, you cannot deny
Just one thing remains for good
Only your heart, your heart of stone

Can’t you see that the walls that you’ve built around you start to crumble
You can cobble the cracks, still blaming somebody else
They will break like a wave and frame your own grave in a moment
You have tried to fake heaven and finally end up in hell

‘Cause you have a heart, a heart of stone
You’re gonna hide it today, but tomorrow you’ll be alone
And from the day that you die, you cannot deny
Just one thing remains for good
Only your heart, your heart of stone

‘Cause you have a heart, a heart of stone
You’re gonna hide it today, but tomorrow you’ll be alone
And from the day that you die, you cannot deny
Just one thing remains for good
Only your heart, your heart of stone

  1. Yeah, we’ve all known that one narcissistic person in our life, or more if we’re unlucky. I had never heard of this band and I must say it’s very impressive. Great lyrics, great singer. Thanks for sharing 🙂
