Song Lyric Sunday – Automobile

For this week’s challenge Jim gives us the prompt suggested by Melanie for “Automobile, Car, Jalopy, Vehicle”. I am a little late to the game this week and my first choice, Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol, was already taken and the blog very well written. So I had to dig a little deeper. I have many songs in my playlist that mention specific cars, such as Black Cadillac by Hollywood Undead, or ones that elude to a vehicle like Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood. So I opted for Automobile by the Icelandic band Kaleo. Fitting as I am Icelandic by birth on my mother’s side.

Kaleo is considered to be a blues rock band from Mosfellsbær, Iceland, which is just outside of Reykjavík. It consists of long time friends, Jökull Júlíusson, who goes by “JJ” (lead guitar and vocals), David Antonsson (drummer), and Daniel Kristjansson (bassist), the three of whom have been playing music since age 17. Rubin Pollock (lead guitarist) joined the band in 2012, followed by Þorleifur Gaukur Davíðsson (harmonicist). Addressing their blues sound, JJ told interviewer, Jonathan Bautts in , that he grew up listening to “…a lot of American music and Delta blues through the years growing up and it has influenced me in many ways. The fact that I’m from Iceland may shock people, but I don’t think about that much when I’m writing.” (Interestingly for me, I knew immediately he was Icelandic by the cadence in the vocals. The first song I heard by Kaleo was “Way Down We Go”. He claims to hide his accent, but Icelanders have a very unique sound and growing up with it, I think I could recognize it anywhere. It is a beautiful sound.)

The song “Automobile” was released in 2013 and honestly needs no interpretation. JJ states about the song Automobile “I wrote that song in Spain while on vacation, sitting in the sun. I had never been to California or America at that point. In the past year, I have visited all those places, including Mexico.”

I hope you enjoy his bluesy sound, singing about what I imagine every young man (and woman) dreams of owning and doing in their automobile.

Imagine myself in an automobile
A hundred miles an hour, only me at the wheel
I want it to shine, to be only mine
The engine has to be just one of a kind

How many dollars do I need sir?
You know I sure don’t have a lot
There must be something we can work out
Well, I’ll take it anyway

I guess I could make room for one, a bottle of rum
You and me together riding into the sun
Live without care, with the wind in my hair
I’m driving through the desert, yeah I’ll go anywhere

Take me where the wheels take me, far away
Wheels take me, I can’t stay
Wheels take me, any place today

Imagine myself in an automobile
A hundred miles an hour, if you know how I feel
Alone with my mind, leave my worries behind
Might even reach the border, it’s just a matter of time, yeah now!I said take me where the wheels take me, far away
Wheels take me, I can’t stay
Wheels take me, any place today

Oh I’m going to San Diego, here I come
San Francisco, won’t be long
Sacramento, whoa yeah, in the sun
I just might go

Oh, I said I’m going to San Diego (San Diego) and San Jose
San Fransisco (San Fransisco) and hang by the bay
Sacramento (Sacramento), whoa, yeah all the way
I just might go all the way to Mexico
I just might go all the way down to Mexico

Blogging gets the noise in my head least for a little while. I use blogging to weed through all that noise and find the humor in each situation, even if it takes some time to find it. I am not selling anything, just sharing experiences as a mother, Amma, wife, paralegal, volunteer, Muslimah, sister, daughter, mother-in-law, woman.
