This week, Song Lyric Sunday hosted weekly by Jim, honors a fellow blogger, Fandango who’s blog is entitled “This, That and the Other”. Of course there are thousands of songs that contain “this” and “that” and maybe a few hundred that contain “other”. I have spent weeks trying to find one containing all three. I draw from my own self-created playlists which are a hodgepodge of genres and try not to cheat by seeking out help from Google or using one that is not part of my playlist. There are times, however, that I have to go outside of my playlist and in doing so, I have discovered other artists and songs. (There was one about coffee several months back that lead me to some new music – for example.)
So for this week, I had to go with Deuce’s “This World is on Fire”. I did not want to introduce Deuce with this song as it is, in my opinion, not one of his better songs and not in my playlist. I have quite a few Deuce (and his former band, Hollywood Undead) in my playlists, but not this song. However, it does contain all three words.
Deuce, whose real name is Aron Erlichman, is an American rapper, guitarist and music producer. He was one of the founding members of Hollywood Undead. Hollywood Undead has been around since about 2005 and every single time, I mention them to my youngest daughter, I get “Mom..seriously…since 5th grade.” My youngest enjoys the more rap style music, but I think H.U. and Deuce are too easy to understand. I believe Deuce has done music with Lil Wayne, who clearly raps in some language unknown to the world. Anyway, I digress…
Deuce left H.U. after alleged differences with the other band members who allegedly “force him out” after he filed suit against the record label, which was also producing Deuce’s solo work, for breach of contract when they refused to release his music due to its “gang references” and “vulgarity”. Deuce then allegedly had anti-Semitic threats against him and a gun pointed at him. To be honest, Hollywood Undead, their early stuff, and a lot of Deuce’s music, does incite the “angry” side, but for me that is sometimes a great release.
For the song, “World on Fire”, Deuce writes: “It’s a story about the end of the world and all of the positive things that will happen even in the face of something bad,” he elaborates. “It’s a positive idea about life after death. You still go on. Musically, it shows how things changed for us up in Portland. That’s melodic classic rock mixed with rap.”
Deuce has, in my opinion, many great songs, and although I don’t count this one as one of the best, if you like the sound, he is a great artist to check out. Beware though – there is anger, vulgarity and many explicit lyrics.
[Intro: Deuce]
This world is on fire
This world is on fire
[Chorus: Deuce]
This world is on fire, we’re restless and we’re tired
Is there someplace other than this, maybe somewhere higher?
I don’t hear no choir, all I see are liars
Is there someplace other than this, maybe somewhere higher?
[Verse 1: Deuce]
It’s hard to make it in a world wasted
All this hatred, I’m impatient
All these changes, different places
Looking sacred, got the aces
Lot of faces, look what we’re facing
Across a nation, who can make it?
Yeah, we’re racing, I can taste it
Who can change it? It’s the Matrix
[Pre-Chorus: Deuce & James Kloeppel]
Everything has its turn
After all we’ve learned
What is it we’ve earned
Just to watch it burn!
[Chorus: Deuce]
This world is on fire, we’re restless and we’re tired
Is there someplace other than this, maybe somewhere higher?
I don’t hear no choir, all I see are liars
Is there someplace other than this, maybe somewhere higher?
[Verse 2: Deuce]
Empire’s fallen, help is calling
Though we all win, we keep crawling
There ain’t no sin that we’ll fall in
It looks so dim, but we’re all in
Through the cold wind, we can see in
We ain’t leaving what we believe in
If it’s freezing, ain’t no reason
We’re still breathing, sun is screaming
[Pre-Chorus: Deuce & James Kloeppel]
Everything has its turn
After all we’ve learned
What is it we’ve earned
Just to watch it burn!
[Chorus: Deuce]
This world is on fire, we’re restless and we’re tired
Is there someplace other than this, maybe somewhere higher?
I don’t hear no choir, all I see are liars
Is there someplace other than this, maybe somewhere higher?
[Verse 3: Deuce & James Kloeppel]
Above the carnage, couldn’t stop it
Where we started, it was promised
All departed, almost lost it
It restarted through the hardship
Was abolished but accomplished
It was rotted, went the farthest
Earth demolished, wasn’t gone yet
Not forgotten, forgive our sins
[Pre-Chorus: Deuce & James Kloeppel]
Everything has its turn
After all we’ve learned
What is it we’ve earned
Just to watch it burn!
[Chorus: Deuce]
This world is on fire, we’re restless and we’re tired
Is there someplace other than this, maybe somewhere higher?
I don’t hear no choir, all I see are liars
Is there someplace other than this, maybe somewhere higher?
[Outro]
Maybe somewhere higher
Maybe somewhere higher
Maybe somewhere higher
New to me. I do like the rhythm, it emphasizes the lyrics nicely.

This is very nice SadiRose, as I usually don’t enjoy rap music, but this seems to be in a different category with more music and less rap. I was actually singing along with the chorus as the song went on which surprised me.

I am unfamiliar with Deuce and I’d never heard this song before, but I enjoyed it. Good pick.
