Song Lyric Sunday – Flowers

This week’s prompts for Song Lyric Sunday are Blossoms/Cherry/Flowers. I chuckled when I first saw these prompts because anything cheerful or blossom-y is probably NOT in my playlist. Well, I was wrong.

I chose the song Flowers on the Wall by Home Free. Well, not BY Home Free, but the version done by Home Free as a tribute to Harold Reid of the Statler Brothers.

The song, Flowers on the Wall, was first made popular in 1966 by the Statler Brothers, and has not gone without its remakes. It has, or rather lyrics from the song, has been used in many different movies and television shows.

I chose the May, 2020 version done by Home Free, the American a cappella group currently consisting of five vocalists, Austin Brown, Rob Lundquist, Adam Rupp, Tim Foust, and Adam Chance. This is not the only song by Home Free in my playlist. I have to say the vocals are amazing.

All five of the current members of Home Free have had formal musical training. The band is structured like a traditional barbershop quartet, with a lead tenor (Austin Brown), two harmony voices (Rob Lundquist – tenor; and, Adam Chance – baritone), and a bass (Tim Foust). In addition to the four voices, percussion sounds are provided by beatboxer, Adam Rupp. All members sing solos, although Austin is the primary front man.

Early on, the band considered itself a traditional a cappella group, singing in a wide variety of styles, however more recently, the group has focused on country music, which has been very well received.

The song, Flowers on the Wall, is about a lover left heart-broken. He sits alone in a room counting flowers on the wall and playing solitaire with a “deck of 51”. That particular line drives me to near madness. That is almost as bad as missing a puzzle piece. My mind cannot process it.

Anyway, here is the 2020 version of Flowers on the Wall, performed by Home Free in tribute to the Harold Reid, the bass vocalist for the Statler Brothers who died in April, 2020.

I keep hearin’ you’re concerned about my happiness
But all that thought you’re givin’ me is conscience I guess
If I was walkin’ in your shoes, I wouldn’t worry none
While you ‘n’ your friends are worryin’ about me, I’m havin’ lots of fun

Countin’ flowers on the wall
That don’t bother me at all
Playin’ solitaire ’til dawn with a deck of fifty-one
Smokin’ cigarettes and watchin’ Captain Kangaroo
Now don’t tell me (now don’t tell me)
I’ve nothin’ to do (I’ve nothin’ to do)

Last night I dressed in tails, pretended I was on the town (I was on the town)
As long as I can dream it’s hard to slow this swinger down
So please don’t give a thought to me, I’m really doin’ fine
You can always find me here, I’m havin’ quite a time

Countin’ flowers on the wall
That don’t bother me at all
Playin’ solitaire ’til dawn with a deck of fifty-one (fifty-one)
Smokin’ cigarettes and watchin’ Captain Kangaroo
Now don’t tell me (now don’t tell me)
I’ve nothin’ to do (I’ve nothin’ to do)
No, don’t tell me, yeah
I got nothin’ to do

Well, it’s good to see you, I must go, I know I look a fright
Anyway my eyes are not accustomed to this light (accustomed to this light)
And my shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete
(To this hard concrete)
So I must go back to my room, and make my day complete

Countin’ flowers on the wall
That don’t bother me at all (bother me at all)
Playin’ solitaire ’til dawn with a deck of fifty-one (fifty-one)
Smokin’ cigarettes and watchin’ Captain Kangaroo
Now don’t tell me (now don’t tell me)
I’ve nothin’ to do (got nothin’ to do)
Now don’t tell me (now don’t tell me)
I’ve nothin’ to do (got nothin’ to do)
